International Consortium for Development of New Mobile Operating System is Being Formed now

Moscow, May 15, 2015. — Nikolay Nikiforov, Minister of Telecom and Mass Communications, carried out working meeting with heads of Sailfish Holding (Hong Kong, China) — developer of open mobile operating system Sailfish and representatives of Russian IT industry.

Members of the meeting discussed use of operating system with open code in public and private sectors taking into account technical, economic and political factors and possibilities for creation of international industrial consortium for development of alternative software products on the base of open operating system and relying on collaboration with BRICS-countries.

“It’s a good example of certain project for international technological cooperation,” said Nikolay Nikiforov, “We are expanding partnership with BRICS in sphere of collective software development for these markets. They all worry about existing monopoly on global software market and support us in this sphere.”

Minister of Telecom and Mass Communications noted that BRICS-countries should unite efforts for development of competitive software on the base of products with open code.

“We think it’s necessary to develop alternatives to closed or closing mobile platforms based on open operating systems. We are ready to support such initiatives and we think that our partners from BRICS will also join us,” said Nikolay Nikiforov, “Sailfish is almost an international company today. It is owned not only by Finnish, but also by Russian and Chinese shareholders. We hope that strategic Indian, Brazilian and South African investors will also join Sailfish soon.”

Import-substitution plan, established by Minsvyaz, contains second section “System software”, including mobile operating systems. It is planned to implement it within international consortiums in order to unite efforts of developers and get access to markets of large countries, including BRICS-countries.
